Ghost of Tsushima was revealed in 2017 but not released until July 17, 2020. It is a PS4 exclusive game. Similar to other PlayStation 4 games, this work offers both physical and digital versions.

The background of Ghost of Tsushima is set in Japan in 1274 AD. It tells the historical events of the Mongolian Empire and the Korean army sent troops to attack Japan at that time. Players will play the role of Jin Sakai the samurai on Tsushima Island.

As one of the last surviving samurai, Jin Sakai rises from the ashes to fight back with help from his allies, but the honorable tactics and code of the samurai won't lead to a possible victory over the Mongols. Jin must move beyond samurai traditions to forge a new way of fighting - the way of the Ghost - as he wages an unconventional war for the freedom of Tsushima Island.

IGN - 9/10

Ghost of Tsushima is an absolutely gorgeous open-world action/adventure with incredible combat and clever solutions to longstanding issues in the genre, despite dropping the ball on stealth. It is an enormous and densely-packed samurai adventure that often left me completely awestruck with both its visual spectacle and excellent combat. By steadily introducing new abilities instead of stat upgrades, its swordplay manages to stay challenging, rewarding and fun throughout the entire 40 to 50 hours that it took me to beat the campaign.

A few aspects are surprisingly lacking in polish in comparison to other first-party Sony games, especially when it comes to enemy AI and the stealth part of its stealth/action split. Still this is an extraordinary open-world action-adventure game that solves several issues that have long gone unaddressed in the genre, while also just being an all-around samurai slashin' good time.

GameSpot - 7/10

The Good

  • A stunning open-world environment with navigational mechanics that help to further absorb you into it

  • Stylish combat successfully mimics the iconic samurai sword fights of cinema to great effect

  • Keen cinematography heightens many moments

  • Swift stealth mechanics and Ghost Tools make it fun to toy with enemies

The Bad

  • Rote open-world quest structures often feel dull

  • Cut scenes lack a degree of life that betrays the game's cinematic strengths

  • Unfortunate camera positioning and environmental objects can regularly ruin you in combat

  • Japanese-language performances don't line up with character mouth movements, creating a jarring disconnect

  • You can't cut down bamboo trees, which is just an utter travesty

Polygon Review:

Ghost of Tsushima has a distinctive aesthetic, after all, but it's only skin-deep. The core game underneath that alluring exterior is a pastiche of open-world game design standards from five years ago; it lacks a real personality of its own.

Eurogamer Review:

Going back to Ghost of Tsushima's roots, as an American game inspired by the comics and the movies of Japan, in a way it's quite apt. It's what happens when you want to pay homage, but don't want to add anything new of your own. It's Hollywood.
