Microsoft tests desktop versions of its Xbox Cloud games, one less reason to buy an Xbox

Mar 12,2021

Microsoft is testing the Xbox Game Streaming application running on Windows. The application can run games directly on the iCloud (no Xbox required) and stream games from the Xbox Series X/S. iCloud is a cloud-based gaming service that allows hundreds of Xbox games to be played online on mobile devices such as phones, tablets, and other devices. It's also called Xbox Game Pass Cloud Gaming (the name will be used for brebretism).

The app also works on Windows ARM devices, such as the Surface Pro X.

Microsoft is also trying to circumvent Apple's App Store regulations by using a Web browser to support iCloud on iPhones and iPads. More announcements are expected shortly.

Microsoft has also recently increased the resolution limit of XCloud from 720P to 1080P, and I believe this is a significant upgrade that will significantly improve the cloud gaming experience.

It's not always good news for cloud gaming, with Marc Whitten stepping down as vice president of Amazon's Luna platform, announced on September 24 last year. Marc Whitten has moved to a new role at Unity after five years at Amazon, where he led Fire TV, Kindle devices, and Luna.
