Japanese netizens have been having too good a time playing RakugakiAR (Japanese name: らくがきAR) lately. It’s a make-your-dream-come-true app that brings life to your doodles! Whether it's on a notebook, a whiteboard, or anywhere, this app scans the scribble you've drawn and brings it to life. The doodle will have its own life and walkabout in the AR environment on your smartphone.
RakugakiAR has just been launched in the App Store Japan for less than a week, but it has dominated the list for several days. And due to its popularity, the original free software now costs $0.99.
It’s very easy to play. Just follow the official advice: “draw on a white paper”, “use black for the outline”, “leave no gaps in the outline” and “doodles too large or too small can’t be scanned”, or you will get a 3d graffiti like:
Wait as the scanned character pop like a cardboard and dance!
Tapping on the screen puts fruit and fish for the characters to eat. (Kawaii!!) But sometimes, it drops poo-poo. It all depends on your luck.
Technically, RakugakiAR doesn’t look novel, but it is the idea to combine drawings to reality that is so fascinating. It makes whatever you draw move as if it is alive. This is probably the most reasonable way to enter the AR world.
In daily lives, Scanning is mostly used to digitize images or paper documents for work, but RakugakiAR tells you how fun it is to use Scanning.
Its developer is a creative studio from Japan called Whatever. Apart from this AR doodle, they have developed many lovely projects before, such as the idea of a robot who can take you to an exhibition during the coronavirus pandemic, or the “Hand Wash Dance” developed to encourage people to wash their hands seriously.
