As Christmas is approaching, another batch of Netflix original Christmas movies and TV shows have been released. You know, once upon a time, I was such a callous coupon clipper. Now I’m crying “how could there be such a great movie” almost every week. The Promised Neverland is my root of all “evils”. Until now, I cannot believe there exist such touching movies and TV shows on this planet. Lately I have just finished watching The Queen's Gambit, the one that inspires me a lot.
Based on the book by Walter Tevis, The Queen's Gambit is written and directed by Scott Frank, and tells the story of the fame and growth of a genius girl called Beth. It does not focus on "how to win" but on various failures and the cost of becoming a genius.
The shots focus more on the responses of the characters, not just the chessboard. We can tell whether the game is tight based on the expressions of onlookers, and infer both players’ psychology in each move through their micro expressions.
Although it is about playing chess, you have been interpreting the psychological warfare between the two sides, and with the help of dazzling editing, a game of chess even has a symphonic rhythm.
